This project was an opportunity for me to use multicultural literature as a way to incorporate other cultures into the classroom. I was able to use the book 13 Cows for America to educate three, second-grade students on a culture that they were not familiar with. This project showed my growth in using multicultural literature in the classroom. I am guilty of having not used as much multicultural literature within my own classroom because I was not confident enough to make informed decisions on the types of multicultural texts to bring into the classroom. Through Advanced Children’s Literature, I was able to grow in my knowledge of multicultural literature as well as become informed in the types of literature to use in order to support a variety of different learners and differences that I will have in my classroom. I grew in my idea that multicultural literature is important to support the voice of all learners in the classroom. I learned that it is important to bring literature in that gives a voice to cultures in the classroom so that children do not go out into the world with false stereotypes. I also grew in my ability to ensure that every difference is accurately represented in my classroom. I now find it important to make sure that my student’s voices are heard and their unique differences are represented so that they know they have a place in my classroom.
